This is the best analysis of Hong Kong’s past, present and future I have seen. There is too much foreign interference and colonial influence to protect interests of the privileged few in Hong Kong. Without taxes and social programs, this unchecked capitalism is creating a great divide of the extreme rich and the extreme poor. Young people need a proper education in Chinese history and culture to develop correct identity. The sooner HK is integrated with other Bay area cities, the better Hong Kongers can participate in China’s prosperity.

Dear Don: You did it again. I found your recent article on Hong Kong to be comprehensive, straightforward, and fair. I have printed several copies to send to some of my friends who do not use computers.

I only have one suggestion to you; that is if you would explain a bit more about the “One country, two systems.” I have found many westerners, as well as some Chinese Americans, do not understand why China’s hands are tied in the recent protest, why most of the high court judges in HK are British citizens.

    Thank you,

    Nancy

This article is well written and factual in content. It looks at all aspects of the real situation and is clear & honest in its analysis. The descriptions are historically accurate and the observations are based on facts. One should read this if one truly wants to understand the events in HK in the past 3 months. I will say that Don was much too kind in describing the intent & duplicity of the western media. Liberal media had an agenda to slander China so they reported biased or fake news and showed doctored video clips. US Politicians also presented biased & false narratives and criticized the wrong side.

Great overview and thank you !

So sad to see how British colonialism and supremacy are still penetrating effectively decades after the official decolonisation/The handover in 1997.

Like some people in the UK here, still so uneducated or simply wilful ignorance, so proud of the legacy of so-called British Empire which was builded by the slaves trades and worldwide invasions…

Now in July 2020, the UK government has just announced one of the many plans to help and improve UK economy after the Brexit, one of them is to offer the long overdue “rights to live and work” visa, i.e. the Second-class British Passport /British National Overseas Passport, to its former British Colonises in Hong Kong, a so-called 5-years citizenship pathway BNO passport holders, in this case, a Refugee from Hong Kong to a British Citizen.

The motive is very clear here, is to fill some of those undesirable jobs left from loosing a great deal of cheap and hard-working labour from the EU, and a bit of cash injection, a mini-boost to the property market… every little bit helps!! Sadly, I fear that far too many people back home-Hong Kong are too colonised/blinded to western superiority?

Or may be, it is just me, have witnessing too many injustices, discriminations against so-called ethnic minorities by the UK government and all those hypocrisies… how they handle the Covid-19 pandemic crisis here is a good example and I will say no more !!
