Christianity Today’s Editorial: Trump Should Be Removed from Office

On December 19, 2019, Christianity Today, evangelicalism’s flagship magazine, published an editorial with the title that “Trump Should Be Removed from Office.” [1] This is an extremely important development, because the large majority of evangelicals, especially white evangelicals, supported Trump in the 2016 election and most likely will also support him in the 2020 election. Our article provides some thoughts on this important development.

Although it is true that Christianity is mostly concerned about the future world of life after death, it does not mean that Christians should not pay attention to their actions in today’s world.  As a matter of fact, Jesus during his time on earth stressed the importance of caring for others and being honest.  For example, Philippians 4:8-9 states “brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. What you have learned and received and heard and seen in me—practice these things, and the God of peace will be with you.”

This means that these are the standards that we should use to govern our lives, and these are the standards we should ask our leaders to follow.  Therefore we should use these standards to decide whom should we elect to lead our country so that the people of our country and of our world will benefit the most.

With President Trump’s constant lies, his lack of concern for others, his complete disregard for the rule of law, his purposed neglect of the world environment that could result in an unlivable world for future generations, and the main force driving him in his decisions is mostly his own wealth, fame, and power.  It is obvious that he is the antithesis of what a Christian life should be like following Jesus’ teachings, and that is why Christianity Today published an editorial that “Trump Should Be Removed from Office.”

It is actually a reflection of the great degradation of the moral fabric of our society that it is still debatable whether President Trump should continue to be our President for a second term.  It is already very clear that he has violated the Ten Commandments more than any other U.S. president, and probably more than the sum of half a dozen or a dozen previous presidents. [2]

The recent Christianity Today editorial should serve as an alarm to us.  Christians need to make a conscious assessment of President Trump’s presidency, whether he should be impeached,  and whether he should be reelected for a second term as the President of the U.S.  If we do not do this assessment, then we do not deserve to be called Christians.
